The Holiday season is known for being the most wonderful time of year, and for good reason! Family gatherings, traveling and delicious foods are some of the things we look forward to most. Some may be wearier, fearful of diverging from their normal eating and exercise routines. Our team at Nashville Periodontal Group have compiled a few tips to help our patients stay their healthiest during the holidays!

Staying Healthy

Does staying healthy during the holidays require that we skip all of the traditions and festivities? Of course not! Simply changing some of our seasonal philosophies can help us stay on track.

·         Don’t skip meals: This may come as a surprise for some, but eating lightly throughout the day can help us from overindulging at meals. Planning a big lunch or dinner? Don’t skip out on breakfast! By choosing healthy, lighter options such as fruit, whole-grain toast or an egg, we set ourselves for success later in the day.

·         Eat only until you are full: For as good as Grandma’s pumpkin pie may be, the first slice tastes just the same as the third or fourth one will. Watch your food portions, and do not feel as through you are obligated to eat everything that is available to you.

·         Drink a lot of water. Oftentimes, people mistake thirst for hunger. Staying hydrated by drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day can help to curb your appetite. Water is also a healthier alternative to holiday drinks like cider and hot chocolate.

Not only will adopting healthy holiday eating habits help keep you fit, it also ensures that your oral health will stay strong, as well. Of course, if you do happen to experience tooth pain or other issues during the holidays, your periodontist in Nashville, TN is just a phone call away.
